Training on hazardous waste classification and management

Within the framework of the ship_rec project, two training courses on on hazardous waste management were offered by NSWMC, with support of ship_rec partners and the local Environmental Protection Bureau. The aim of the courses was to enhance the knowledge and skills of the participants in:

  1. Understanding China’s new environmental protection law, with focus on hazardous waste management
  2. Understanding the new categories of Hazardous Waste in China;
  3. Identifying Hazardous Wastes, in particular the application of the correct Hazardous Waste codes;
  4. Getting a more clear understanding of the requirements of both MEP and China Custom on waste management in waste-importing activities.

The first training course took place in Qingdao from 21 – 22 May 2015, the second training course was organized in Nanjing from 23 – 24 September 2015. Both courses were attended by more than 100 participants, ranging from waste-importers and traders (including waste-ship importers), to local waste institutes and waste disposal companies from the ship_rec target provinces of Shangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujiang and Guangdong and the city of Tianjin.  The contents of the courses are listed below:

  • Understanding China New Environmental Protection Law of China, with focus on hazardous waste management, by Lingjiang, Director NSWMC
  • New environmental management and requirement for waste importing, incuding waste-ship importing, Hu Hualong, NSWMC
  • Requirements and regulations for China Custom in checking waste-ship importing, Mr. Liu Hongwei, China Custom
  • Introduction to the existing legal inspection and fighting criminals on irlegal waste importing in China, by China Custom
  • Methodology and practice of identifying HWs, Mr. Zhou Binyang, Waste Institutes of China Academy of Environmental Science
  • Introduction to Management system of waste-importing, by Lan Xiaofeng, NSWMC
  • Challenges and Opportunites in the New Economy, Hang Wengao, Evaluator, Economy Times Evaluation
  • Management and Case Studies on Waste-importing, Ju Hongyan, NSWMC
  • Environmental Management Regulation on Waste-Importing, Wen Xuefeng, NSWMC
  • Group discussions on HW management in Waste importing

During the courses, two documents were handed out to the participants:

  1.  New categories of hazardous waste in China
  2.  Guidelines for the identification of hazardous wastes and the application of hazardous waste codes
